Elon Musk said he wanted to join Netscape, but failed attempts and rejections forced him to start his own internet company and enter the tech industry alone.

A video of Elon Musk has resurfaced that's garnering attention, in which Musk explains how early rejections paved the way for his entrepreneurial journey. In the clip, Musk talks about his attempts to land a job at Netscape during the early days of the internet boom.

Elon Musk recalls rejection at Netscape

In the video, Elon Musk says he initially had no plans to start a company. Instead, he was actively seeking a position at an existing internet firm, Moneycontrol reported. 

He explained that he sent his resume to Netscape, one of the most well-known companies at the time, but never received a response. 

Musk further stated that Marc Andreessen was also aware of his efforts, although he believes the resume was never seen. This lack of response played a significant role in his early career decisions.

Waiting in the lobby of Netspace

Musk said he also tried a more direct approach by going to the Netscape office and waiting in the lobby, hoping to meet someone. 

However, he said he was initially too shy to strike up a conversation. This experience left him frustrated, forcing him to rethink his approach. Instead of taking a job, he decided to start working alone.

Turning rejection into opportunity

Musk said that his decision to create something of his own came not from a desire to start a company, but from a need to participate in the growing internet ecosystem. He said that because he couldn't find a role at an internet company, he decided to create one himself.
