There will be no trading in the stock market today, this is the reason behind it

The stock market will be closed on March 31, 2026, the last day of the financial year. There will be no trading on the BSE and NSE. Investors will now have to wait until April 1, while the MCX will only be open in the evening session.

Stock Market today

If you invest or trade in the stock market, today will be a little different for you.

The stock market is usually open on Tuesdays, but this time, on March 31, 2026, there will be no trading. This means you will be unable to buy or sell shares today. Investors will now have their next opportunity on Wednesday, April 1, 2026.

The market is closed today due to Mahavir Jayanti. Trading on both of the country's major stock exchanges, the BSE and NSE, is completely suspended for this religious occasion.

This means that there will be no transactions across all segments, including equities (shares), derivatives, and securities lending and borrowing (SLB).

Financial year ends

However, today is also special for another reason. March 31st is the last day of the financial year, also known as Bank Closing Day. This day is considered a settlement holiday.

Normally, trading is permitted on settlement holidays, but clearing and settlement processes are not. However, this year, due to Mahavir Jayanti, there is a complete holiday, so trading is also not taking place.

MCX situation

Now, if we talk about the commodity market, the situation there is a little different. The National Commodity and Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) will be closed all day today.

The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) will have its morning session closed, but the evening session will be open. This means that trading will resume on MCX from 5:00 PM to 11:55 PM. Investors will also need to consider several other holidays in the coming days.

The market will be closed on April 3rd for Good Friday. Additionally, there will be no trading on April 14th due to Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar Jayanti. Therefore, it is important to keep these dates in mind when planning your trading in April.

Market of the previous trading day

Speaking of Monday, the market's performance was less than impressive. The week began on a down note.

The Sensex saw a significant drop, closing down over 1,600 points. The Nifty also fell nearly 500 points. Selling pressure was clearly visible in the market.

The rupee also appeared to be weakening. The rupee crossed 95 against the dollar, which could be a cause for concern for investors. Overall, the market is currently under some pressure.

Therefore, investors are advised not to make hasty decisions and wait for the market to reopen. It would be wise to invest with proper information and planning.
