Despite the ongoing tensions in West Asia, prices of essential food items in India remain stable. The government has stated that no unusual rise or fall has been observed in the market so far. The central government is continuously monitoring both the wholesale and retail markets.
The government is monitoring it daily
According to the Department of Consumer Affairs, prices of 40 essential commodities are being monitored daily at 528 centers across the country.
Data is being updated through a mobile app. The government is also ensuring that supplies remain stable and there is no hoarding or black marketing.
Adequate availability of pulses and vegetables
According to the government, pulse production has been good this year, and a buffer stock of approximately 2.8 million tons exists. Imports of tur (tur) and urad (black lentil) have been placed in the free category until March 2027 to ensure supply constraints.
Onion, potato, and tomato production are also comparable to last year, so there are currently no supply concerns. The government has also begun procurement to increase the buffer stock of onions.
Strict instructions on hoarding
The central government has directed states to take strict action against hoarding and black marketing. To this end, constant communication is being maintained with the states. A control room has also been set up to monitor prices and consumer complaints.
adequate grain stock
According to the Department of Food and Public Distribution, the country's wheat and rice stocks are significantly in excess of the required amount.
Currently, the stock of wheat is approximately 22.2 million tonnes and that of rice is 38 million tonnes, sufficient for PDS and emergency needs. Their prices have not increased significantly in the past year.
Edible oil and other supplies also stable
The government stated that edible oil availability is adequate. Imports from countries such as Indonesia, Malaysia, Russia, Ukraine, Argentina, and Brazil are continuing. Furthermore, a good mustard crop has strengthened domestic supplies.
Government alert, will intervene if needed
The government says it is constantly monitoring the situation and will take immediate action if necessary. Currently, prices of essential commodities, including sugar, are under control, providing relief to the public.
