Bharti Airtel, one of the country's largest telecom companies, announced a major expansion for its non-banking finance company (NBFC), Airtel Money Limited, on Monday, saying it will infuse ₹20,000 crore in capital over the next few years.

The company said in a statement that 70 percent of this capital will be contributed by Airtel, while the remaining 30 percent will come from its promoter group, Bharti Enterprises.

Airtel Money received a license to operate as an NBFC from the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) on February 13, 2026. This move by Airtel is positioning the company to challenge Mukesh Ambani on the NBFC front.

Investment of 20 thousand crores

Bharti Airtel stated that the announcement of major plans for its NBFC, Airtel Money Limited, reflects its commitment to reducing the credit gap in India. ₹20,000 crore of capital will be infused into the NBFC over the next few years.

Airtel stated that over the past two years, it has developed a robust lending service provider (LSP) model through its digital platform. Loans worth over ₹9,000 crore have been disbursed through this platform so far.

According to the company, loan default rates have been kept under control due to robust credit and risk assessment models, disciplined portfolio management, and real-time risk monitoring.

What is the company's target?

Airtel Executive Vice Chairman Gopal Vittal said the platform's success demonstrates the company's ability to create a national impact by combining technology, data, and customer trust.

He added that the goal is to build a trusted and innovative digital lending business through NBFC expansion.

According to Care Edge Ratings, India's organized lending to GDP ratio is 53 percent, indicating significant potential for credit expansion.

Airtel stated that the NBFC's distribution system will remain integrated with the LSP platform, but a clear separation will be maintained at the operational level.
